Back in 2018, we were working as first responders and ended up on a random shift together. A lot of things had been talked about over twelve hours, and at one point we both agreed working for ourselves was way better than working for somebody else. Starting a candle company wasn't even an idea then.
A few months later, we picked up another shift together. Josh was selling candles as a fundraiser for his school group, and being the awesome guy he is, Don bought a couple. They were awful. They generated a ton of soot, barely gave off a scent, and the mushrooming wick bored a tunnel straight down the middle of the candle.
Fast forward to 2020, and the topic of entrepreneurship came up again. The conversation went something like this: "Remember those crappy candles? Why don't we start our own candle company? It can't be that hard. Just stick a wick in a jar and pour in some wax, right? When Michael Kittredge was 16, he melted some crayons to make his mother a Christmas candle. That's how Yankee Candle started. Have you seen his car collection?"
Neither of us had a background in candle making, but we both had made the decision to pursue our MBA's. Good enough. So in March of 2020, we sat at a kitchen table and hammered out a business plan over a couple glasses of scotch.
Over the next four months, we traveled down a seemingly endless stream of wax samples, wicks, jars, oils, energy drinks and misinformation. We'd be lying if we said we didn't have moments where we found ourselves reflecting on the path we chose and questioned its course.
Then it happened. One night, while looking over another dozen test candles, we noticed one that was burning exactly the way we envisioned. We finally had our eureka moment.

We believe that using only the best ingredients is the key to creating candles that not only look and smell amazing, but burn cleanly and evenly.
Doshi candles are free of parabens, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals, making them safer for you, your family, and the environment. To accomplish this, all of our ingredients are cross-referenced against the California Prop 65 list.
Our palm wax is responsibly sourced from a certified RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) supplier. Established in 2004, RSPO promotes the growth and use of sustainable palm oil products through global standards.
Like our palm wax, our coconut blend wax is paraben and phthalate-free. It is also Leaping Bunny Certified (Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals), ensuring no animal testing has occurred during any development or production phases.
Every candle we make is hand-poured with care in small batches at our studio located in Clarkston, Michigan.
We use both traditional techniques and modern technology to create candles that are both beautiful and functional.
We take pride in every candle we produce, and we're confident that you'll be able to see and smell the difference.
It's important to follow these guidelines to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience:
The most common issues we've encountered are trimming wicks too short and burning the candle well beyond the recommended 1/2" point of remaining wax.
Too short of a wick may cause the candle to burn unevenly or refuse to stay lit. In this case, we recommend scraping some cooled wax from the surface of the candle to increase the length of the wick. It's never a good idea to pour molten wax directly from the container. Palm wax has a melting point of over 180°F.
The crimp point where the wick is seated in its base is right around 1/4". No candle should be burned past this point as it could create an uncontrolled flare-up. There is also the potential to concentrate too much heat in a small area which could cause the glass to crack or shatter.
Candles burned in two to four-hour sessions help ensure an even wax pool and aid in the reduction of tunneling. It is also best to keep your candles away from breezes to help ensure an even burn.
Above all, never place a candle on or near combustibles or leave a burning candle unattended. Pets and children are naturally curious!
Our customers have shared with us all the creative ways they are repurposing our containers after they've enjoyed our candles - everything from holding office supplies to makeup and even spare change. Some even use our wood lids as coasters.
These are all great uses and helps keep our containers out of landfills, but we want to add another option for those who would otherwise toss them into the trash.
For every container and lid you return, you'll receive $3.00 off your next candle. No need to clean them out - we'll take them as-is.
You can return as many as you want. Some bring back a single container and lid, some hold on to them and bring a box full to us. If you're local, you can arrange to drop them off at our shop. We'll even accept them at all the markets and events you'll find us at throughout the year.
We already have many loyal customers participating in this program, and look forward to many more!
